An Easy Flower to Grow by Seed

I love to plant a cutting garden in the Spring that I can enjoy throughout the summer. One of the easiest and most cost-effective flowers I grow is Zinnias! I started to fall in love with them when I learned of the different varieties and colors. They are hardy and bloom from late Spring to the first frost. I love that they attract butterflies and hummingbirds!

They grow perfectly from seed in sunny areas; they need to be planted with just a ¼ inch of dirt over them as they need light to germinate - the process couldn’t be easier. Water lightly, so you don’t wash the seeds away. They are annuals, and they will grow for just one season. They come from the sunflower and daisy families, and you can find them in many beautiful colors. My favorites are lime green and coral!

I love the symbolism of zinnias; they stand for friendship, endurance, daily remembrance, goodness and lasting affection. The Victorian meaning of zinnias are thoughts of an absent friend or someone you have not seen in awhile. When they grow tall and proud in your garden, I can see how they could remind you of someone special.

I plant them rather intensively, so they crowd out the weeds in my garden, and I have a plethora of blooms to adorn my tables and kitchen all season. Also, they are great for gifting bouquets of little arrangements to friends. I love picking up interesting vases and keeping them on my gift shelf for little thoughtful gifts!
